No control on fares | Commuters still being duped by auto rickshaw drivers | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 8: Despite directions by the administration to the auto-drivers to install electronic meters and charge the commuters according to the norms fixed by the government, most of them are violating it, while the officials including the traffic police watch helplessly. Though the announcement regarding installation of electronic meters was taken keeping in view that passengers would be charged a reasonable amount for their journey, surprisingly years have passed after that announcement made by government and the commuters are still paying extra. About two year back district administration has directed the auto unions to comply with the order and install the meters in their vehicles for which the help will be provided by the transport department, but still every day hundreds of commuters have to pay charges as per the wishes of the drivers. “Most of the drivers charge as per their whims and we have no option but to pay. Transport department should take measures to implement the fare rates”, said a local resident. “Auto drivers charge exorbitantly and they always charge more than the fare fixed by Road Transport Office, Jammu,” said Sheena Sharma, a resident of Resham Ghar colony. In many instances many commuters alleged that whenever one asks for turning meter on, drivers mostly have simple reply meter is not working and there is different system in Jammu. However auto-rickshaw operators hold the Transport Department responsible for non-installation and non-functioning of electronic meters in their three-wheelers. “The meter costs more than Rs 3000 and its totally out of our reach. See the increase in the petrol rates, how can we survive on the fare per km fixed by the government”, said Raju, an auto operator at Jewel. As per the rates fixed by the government, for first one kilometer the fare is charged at Rs.12.50 and Rs 9.50 for subsequent kilometers, which the auto unions demand should be revived keeping in view the increase in the fuel charges. Couple of years back we heard that concerned authorities are planning to install electronic meters, but noting of the sort happened on the ground, moreover each electronic meter is very costly, which auto-rickshaw operator have to pay from his pocket,” Sultan, another auto-rickshaw driver at Residency road. However, an official from the transport department said that the installation of meters in the autos is under consideration of the administration. “We are trying to work with the auto union so that the matter could be resolved and both people and operators would be happy. Meter installation has got delayed as there were differences over certain technical aspects with the auto union so that the matter could be resolved and both people and operators would be happy.”, said the official.
