Security beefed up ahead of Republic day
1/8/2011 10:56:21 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 8: Even as the Republic day is far ahead, security in entire Kashmir valley especially in the summer capital has been beefed up. Additional policemen have been deployed at sensitive spots to maintain strict vigil.
The police was seen frisking pedestrians and checking vehicles at several places including Lal Chowk in the summer capital today. The police also checked identity cards of the people.
A local news agency reported that police was keenly watching all the people entering the Srinagar city where the main function shall be held on January 26.
The police, reports said, have been going from house to house to get data for a database which the police want to set up. People from other parts of the state living in rented accommodations in Srinagar are scrutinized and subjected to severe questioning.
The security men, it seems are worried over BJP youth wing, Yuva Morcha's plans of hoisting the tricolor at Lal Chowk and the response it has evoked from Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik who dared the BJP to hoist the flag at Lal Chowk. "Time will tell whether BJP hoists their flag or we unfurl our flag at Lal Chowk", he said.
Sensing trouble, the mainstream politicians including former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah have urged the BJP not to go ahead with its plan of hoisting the tricolor. "It will set the valley on fire yet again", he pleaded. However, the BJP and its Yuva Morcha have responded by expressing their determination to go ahead with their plan.
The BJP has threatened country wide agitation incase their yatra which is scheduled to conclude at Lal Chowk with the hoisting of Tricolor on January 26 is not allowed.
The government, therefore, has limited options, opines a political activist. A similar yatra led by the then BJP President, Murli Manohar Joshi in 1992 evoked critical reaction from the militants. A rocket exploded a few meters from the clock tower where the flag was hoisted.
