Muftis and Omar draw swords out of their sheaths | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 8: When the main opposition, PDP, announced over two month ago that it would be attending the district development board meetings people and political leaders saw in it the signs of a thaw between the PDP and the National Conference. Some started believing that some understanding has been hammered out between the two traditional political foes when Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, appreciated the PDP decision to participate in the board meetings. This impression had been formed after the PDP had adopted tough postures by boycotting the entire Assembly session in September-October in Sringar in protest against the killing of over 100 youths in clashes with the security forces and against Omar led Government's consistent strategy on rejecting various resolutions that had been moved by the PDP. However, whatever impression had been formed on the easing of tension between two parties evaporated like a bubble of water when Omar Abdullah and the Muftis started berating each other. Omar said that the PDP was a part of the problem and not of solution of the Kashmir imbroglio. He castigated the Mufti's rule for not having been able to resolve the shortage of electricity and when he had been relegated to the opposition side he (Mufti) had been blaming the NC led coalition Government for having compounded the power crisis in the state. Mufti Mohd. Sayeed has been consistent, during the last four months, in criticising the National Conference for its failure in fulfilling its commitment on development. The Mufti has also been critical of non-performance and misgovernance since 2008 when Omar took over as Chief Minister. Reports said that Omar has started targeting the Muftis following reports that the PDP had succeeded in extending its areas of influence in the state, especially in the Jammu region, after it had fortified its position in the Kashmir valley. Omar has fears that the Muftis could make things for him and his Government hot and instead of setting his house in order the Chief Minister aims at demolishing the political base that the Muftis have built for the PDP. The Muftis have opened the mouths of their cannons against Omar only after they have received reports that the Congress high command has opposed change in the present political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir. The Muftis plan to launch a campaign against the NC led Government on the basis of its failure in resolving the basic problems of the people of all the three regions. And Omar's failure in ensuring reduced load shedding period is being utilised by the PDP for hammering the head of the ruling coalition. Well impartial observers accept the claim of the Muftis that people had a better time and enjoyed taste of transparent democratic activities during the time Mufti Sayeed was the Chief Minister. If not anything else the Mufti was instrumental in getting the electricity load shedding period reduced from nine to three hours in the state. By trying to expose many a skeletons in the cupboard of the NC Government the Mufti does not want the centre and people in the state to believe that everything is all right in Jammu and Kashmir. There are a number of senior Congress leaders in the state who secretly wish for the formation of the Congress-PDP Government which could prevent the Congress from facing rapid erosion by the style of functioning of Omar Abdullah and his uncalled for statements and speeches. |
