Vikram shines in J&K Bank’s successive Gold Cup win | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 9: Proving that he has no match in the state, J&K Bank’s guard at the net, Vikram Singh today single handedly guided his side to retain the Christmas Gold Cup Football trophy, here today. In the final, played this afternoon at crowd puller, Mini Stadium Parade ground here, clad in blue, Bank trounced another departmental team of J&K Forest XI 3-0 in tie breaker. Earlier, in the stipulated time the well contested final ended in a goalless draw. Had not Vikram saved the penalty kick taken by Ashiq Mushtaq of Forest in the 48th minute of the 80-minute game, the Bank may have lost the title clash. Later, realizing that extra time may lead to poor visibility in view of the foggy weather at the venue, the centre referee, in consultation with other officials and the team captains decided to go straightway for tie-breaker to decide the fate of the match. In the tie-breaker, Vikam Singh proved that he has the ability to create the difference. Virkam saved two penalty kicks to guide his side to a memorable 3-0 win. While Rizwan Shafi and Azhar Ali failed to dodge the goal-keeper, Shahid Mushtaq kicked the ball out of the net. From winners, J&K Bank, Bilal Ahmed, Intikhab Alam and Mohit Verma successfully converted the penalties into goal. Earlier, in the stipulated time, both sides played aggressive football resulting into forced errors. As many as six players were penalized by the centre referee, Rajib Dev for foul play. From Forest XI, Arshid Ali (5th), Gowhar Jan (10th), Rizwan Ahmed (45th), Ashiq Mushtaq (61st) were shown yellow cards while Rohit Kumar (31st) and Khalid (40th) were punished with yellow. In the final and valedictory function, Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik was chief guest who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. He was accompanied by a host of guests and organizers, All J&K Christian Welfare Association. Before the presentation of running trophy to J&K Bank, chairman of the organizing committee, SM Gill presented a brief note of the 10-day long tournament held at twin venues of GGM Science College and Mini Stadium Parade.
