Temple sanctities being destroyed with impunity | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Vaibhavi Chandel Jammu Jan 9: Off late, the city of temples has turned into the safe havens for the dwelling for residential people exercising their influences to occupy the premises at their whims and fancies.
The small hutments made inside the temples’ premises in the Jammu city have been encroached upon by the relatives or known people of the priests and other people who have converted these places for their residential purposes thus creating nuisances inside the temples.
This though has invited the public ire but not yet made any dent to the Temple authorities or the state administration.
Lack of proper maintenance and clinical surveillance in this regard has given free access to these occupants who either are the influential people or enjoy a close acquaintance in the administrative hierarchy of Temple authorities or the state administration.
But it’s the time when one actually needs to see whether these temples are being protected for their sanctity or are just there for the sake of it. Moreover these accommodations are not only occupied by the priests but also by his future generations and in some cases also by the relatives.
The Ram temple opposite Radio Station is one such example where the open area of the temple had been very well constructed into living accommodations. The temple also had a sarai which today is nowhere to be seen. All this has destroyed the age old architectural beauty of the temple while raising a question mark on the sanctity of the same.
In certain temples the sarais are being converted into accommodations which are further given on rent to the laborers and the working class by the unlawful occupants.
These occupants perform all their daily chores within the temple premises where there is no proper sewage system for the disposal of the human waste. All this disturbs the pure aura and spoils the sacred environment of the temples. Commenting upon this grave issue of temple sanctity President of Dharmarth Trust stated, ]
“Accommodations in the temple were basically given to the priests or the trust members who took care of the temple but certain priests have passed on these accommodations to their future generations and relatives.
Though we are trying to look into the matter but a huge problem stands ahead of us as its very difficult to oust the people who are staying there from past twenty- twenty five years.”
Looking upon the legal aspect senior City advocate Mohd Iqbal says, “No matter if people are staying in temple premises from past so many years one can approach the court to protect the sanctity of the temples as nobody has the right to spoil the sacredness of the religious places.”
