Tree Talk travels to Aknoor | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu Jan 9: Tree talk campaign, launched from Jammu University New Campus near river Tawi on December 19, 2010, today traversed through woodlands of Manda and Mahamaya before reaching Doomi , Akhnoor near river Chenab. Braving chilled and foggy morning , tree talk campaign got kick started with over 100 participants, including many prominent Dogri poets (O.P Shakir, Randhir Raiapuria , Kewal Kumar ), Tree Taxonomy experts ( O P Vidyarthi , Dr Yashpal , Dr Harish Dutt ) , folk healers ( Hakeem Gopal Krishan Sharma ) , teachers ( Balwant , Rajesh Salalia , Ashok, Naveen , Sanjeev ) , scholars ( Sehrish Gazal , Naik Yasira , Sunil Arya , Shafqat ) , D F O’S (S L Baboo , Rafi Ahmad Bhat , Hitender ,Inderjeet ), students , foresters ( Sudesh, Deepak ) , media persons ( Doordarshan ) , citizens ( Ashok Gandotra , O P Bakshi , Manjeet Singh , Mohd Hafeez , Rehman Malik , Bilal ) and others assembled inside Doomi Forest School. Tree talk start with a story revolving around a heritage tree called Jiyopota or Patajadi in Dogri , an old Jiyopota tree once standing proudly at Jiyopota Ghat across the river Chenab in Akhnoor had a pride feeling to have witnessed royal coronation ceremony of Dogra king Maharaja Gulaab Singh in 1846 . Old archeological site of Ambaraan is also located close to Doomi and many Jiyopota trees can be raised all around . Village Pallanwalla located next to Akhnoor has been named so after abundantly growing Palash trees also named as Flame Of The Forest ( Butea monosperma ) and it is said that Great Sanskrit Poet ,Kalidasa visited that site and felt mesmerized on seeing Plash trees laden with enchanting orange glow of dense blooms . Village Sohaanjana has its name derived from Sohanjana tree called Drum stick Tree or Horse Radish Tree ( Moringa oleifera ) which grows in plenty in and around Jammu and is a multipurpose tree used as vegetable ,medicine , fodder , oil and in afforestation programmes . The significance of Article 51-A included in Indian Constitution was explained to the participants to emphasize the role citizens of India are supposed to play in the care and preservation of forests , lakes , rivers and environment for better and prosperous future of the nation. Highlighting importance of tree conservation, well known environmentalist O P Sharma Vidyarthi noticed with concern that in this International Year of Forests, Kerala has declared 14 trees as endangered namely Diospyros candolleana ( relative of Dogra Rajain ) , Myristica dactyloides , M. malabarica ( wild nutmeg or Jaiphal ) , Symplocos cochinchinensis ( relative of our Dogra Laudhra ) ,Garcinia indica , G. gummigutta ( Kokum ) , Persea macrantha ( Relative of our Dogra Chandra ) , Cinnamomum macrocarpum ( relative of our Tajpatter ) , Artocarpus hirsuta ( relative of Dheu ) , Mappia foetida ( Cancerparna ) and others . Year 2011 is being formally launched by UN as International Year of Forests on January 24 and IUCN is going to create public awareness regarding conservation of forests which cover 31% of globe and have habitats for 80% biodiversity . Next Tree Talk scheduled for January 16 will be held in Soil Conservation School, Miransahib and it will be an occasion of special get-together for forest trainees to mark Golden Jubilee of Miran Sahib School ( Founded in 1961 ) and Centenary Year of KFT School , Chitternar ( Founded in 1911 by W H Lovegrove ) with trainees presently camping at Doomi in Jammu .
