Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu Highway resumes | | | SRINAGAR : Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which was suspended last evening following snowfall, has been resumed today. However, the National Highway, connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed since December 1, due to heavy snowfall at several places. A traffic police official said that Highway was closed last evening due to snowfall and slippery road conditions between Jawahar Tunnel and Banihal in Doda district of Jammu region. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the Highway, the only road linking the valley with the rest of the country, pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the Highway. All vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials, from Jammu to Srinagar, which were stranded on other side of the Banihal, have been cleared following improvement in the weather. Vehicles from Srinagar have been allowed to Jammu today. To avoid any traffic jam and accidents on the Highway, the authorities had decided to allow one way traffic from last week following heavy snowfall which resulted in closure of the road for two days. The Srinagar-Leh National Highway remained closed between Sonmarg to Menamarg due to snowfall at several places, including Zojila pass. The Highway was closed from December 1, because of slippery road conditions due to minus 10 to minus 18 degree celsius temperature at Zojila and other places on the Highway, which will now reopen only in April or May this year. |
