From autonomy to completing 6 years in office Are 'clouds of uncertainty' over for NC? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 9: Since the past one month, the priorities of National Conference (NC) seem to have changed. The ruling party no longer talks about autonomy. All the statements issued during the said period revolved around Chief Minister's term and NC's relation with its coalition partner. Although the Congress party has agreed that Omar Abdullah shall hold office for six years, the recent statements of some senior Congress leaders have created a stir in the National Conference. The party's patron and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah is said to have called on the Congress high command at New Delhi and apprised them of the `benefits' of having his son as the Chief Minister for the full term. So far so good. It seems, senior Abdullah has Succeeded in persuading the Congress high command to `tame' some of its leaders in the state who see Omar's continuation in office for six years a grave threat to the Congress party. As they say there are no permanent friends or foes in politics, nothing can be predicted at this point of time. However, the talk of a change of guard after three years forced the National Conference abandon its autonomy plan for the time being. Last year when Justice (retd) Sageer submitted his recommendations, the NC felt on top of the world. Although the retired judge made a passing reference of autonomy, the NC felt vindicated. From that day, the NC talked extensively about its autonomy document. But in the recent past two important developments took place in quick succession. A senior Congress leader from Jammu publicly said that the Chief Ministerial berth must be given to a Congress man after the coalition completes three years. He gave his reasons for the change. A few days earlier, New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir stated that they saw a better option (than autonomy) in Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Self rule document. The two developments, it seems, have dampened NC's spirits. The impact of these developments can be gauged from Dr Mustafa Kamal's statements. He was all fire against the Congress party. Sensing danger to his son's chances of completing six years in office, his elder brother and incumbent Chief Minister's father, Dr Abdullah tried to do some damage control in his usual and unique humorous style and snubbed his brother for what he said making uncalled for comments. For the time being the clouds of uncertainty that loomed large over Omar's chief ministership are over but the moot question is can NC be sure of 'eating' the cake as well. |
