Time for Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor to stem the rot in Jammu University | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 10: The University of Jammu was established in 1969. It was established after the people of Jammu struggled for years and made supreme sacrifices. A number of students laid down their lives for the cause. It was hoped that the establishment of a separate university in Jammu would cater to the educational needs of the people and produce graduates and post-graduates compete enough to compete with anyone and contribute to the society. The hope was not misplaced. The university did perform extremely well for years. It was headed by competent Vice-Chancellors, including JN Bhan, JD Sharma, SC Dube, ML Lakhanpal, MR Puri and YR Malhotra and so on. All of them tried their best to raise the educational standard, notwithstanding some acts of omission and commission. However, things in the university started deteriorating after 2000 and right now the situation is horrible. The Jammu University, which not so-long-ago was hailed as a great house of learning, has become an institution that is known for everything but education. That things in the University of Jammu have assumed alarming proportions could be seen from performance review on the working of University of Jammu for the period 2003-04 to 2007-08. The review was done by non other than an impartial agency, called Accountant General (Audit), Jammu and Kashmir. The Early Times has accessed copy of performance review. All these highlights are self-explanatory and prove beyond any doubt that the University of Jammu suffered in every respect during 2003-2008. Everyone knows who was the Vice-Chancellor of the University during this period. He was none other than the one who is being considered for appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu and about whom certain vested interests say that he raised the standard of the University and brought it at par with some of the international universities of repute. It's time for the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor to intervene and set thins right in Jammu University. It is a must on their part because they are supposed to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the University. |
