Jammu,November 8 The authorities of the Custodian General had to seek police protection for foiling the design of land grabbers, supported by a senior IAS officer,for grabbing over 542 kanals of land near Kotbhalwal on the outskirts of Jammu. Official sources said that when the Custodian General felt that the police were not providing the Department protection for ringing the custodian land by a barbed wire he approached Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad. True to his commitment of waging a war against land grabbers he immediately instructed police authorities and the Deputy Commissioner to provide security to the officials of the custodian Department while they raised the barbed wire around 542 kanals of land. It was after the Chief Minister’s instructions that the vast tracts of the custodian land was saved from being grabbed by the land mafia. Sources disclosed that the Government has identified nearly 50 police officers, senior bureaucrats, businessmen and political leaders who have carried out land grabbing on a large scale.The Chief Minister has already announced that over 13 lakh kanals of land have been grabbed by the land mafia in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir. According to these sources,an inservice senior IAS officer,besides a former Chief secretary have grabbed or purchased land,for a song,at Bajalta,14 kms east of Jammu.have grabbed land and one of them has established a fish farm. Another set of officers,political leaders and businessmen are said to have purchased for song vast areas of land between Patnitop and Sudhmahadev after the two tourist resorts were connected by road. Some senior officers in the traffic Department too are involved in land grabbing cases.One senior officer is said to have sold the land he had grabbed to escape Chief Minister’s axe falling on him. Sources said that the Government has constituted a team of officers for identifying all those who have been involved in land grabbing so that action could be taken against them as per the law.What seems to have worried the Chief Minister is the reports revealing that besides the attack of land grabbers on the custodian land they had grabbed vast chunks of forest land in connivance with support from revenue officials and senior bureaucrats besides the police officers.
