11/8/2006 11:07:14 PM

Srinagar, November 8
PDP patron and former Chief Minister has underscored the need for resolution of Kashmir issue without going through political history of Jammu & Kashmiri state.
Making the statement during an interview with American Television Network, Sayeed said Kashmir issue needs to be resolved on the basis of principles and all parties need to try for evolving a consensus on a widely acceptable formula on the basis of prevailing ground reality in the state. Saying that he talked to people of different schools of political thought living on either of the two divided parts of Jammu & Kashmir state, he said peoples on both the sides of LoC aspire for peace.
Terming the ongoing Indo-Pak peace process reversible, he said people of both India and Pakistan are involved in conflict resolution process and resolution of Kashmir issue is round the corner, but every thing can't happen immediately. Admitting that the process will last long and set backs can't be ruled out, he said the movement of peace process is in right direction. Saying that PDP want's self rule within Indian constitution, Sayeed said his party seeks constitutional guarantees to ensure that elected Governments are not dismissed by Central Government as has happened many a times in the past.
Disclosing that his party has also proposed election of Governor instead of continuing the present practice under which Governor is nominated by Central Government, Sayeed said PDP favours regional autonomy for all the regions in both the divided parts of Jammu & Kashmir State. However when asked about the acceptability of PDP's self rule proposal to Pakistan, Sayeed said " the proposal needs to be looked at through the prism of resolution of Kashmir issue". Seeking permission for starting trade activities between the divided parts of the state, Sayeed said the trans LoC travel has led to increase in contacts between the people of both the parts of the state.
