Light to moderate snowfall in Kashmir,-Kargil at-15 day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR Jan 11 : The summer capital, Srinagar, experienced light snowfall while upper reaches received moderate snowfall in the Kashmir valley, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg with minus 8.7 degrees was coldest.
People in the Ladakh region continued to shiver as there was no respite from the cold wave conditions because of sub zero temperature.
There would be moderate to very heavy snowfall for two days from January 14 as Western Disturbances (WD) are approaching.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced light snowfall for about half an hour this morning following improvement in the minimum temperature because of cloudy weather during the night.
A Met spokesman said 0.6 mm snowfall equivalent to rain has been recorded in Srinagar till 0800 hrs.
However, he said, due to cloudy weather during the night, the minimum temperature has improved by about two degrees. Against yesterday’s minus 2.2 degree, it was 0.0 degree this morning in Srinagar.
He said in minus temperature the possibility of snowfall or rain are very less.
Though the minimum temperature has also increased in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, light to moderate snowfall was experienced early this morning.
However, in the upper reaches, including Affarwat and Khilanmarg moderate snowfall was recorded.
The minimum temperature was minus 8.7 degrees against yesterday’s minus 11 degrees.
Health resort of Pahalgam, in south Kashmir, about 1.8 mm snowfall equivalent to rain was recorded this morning. However, in the upper reaches, including holy Amarnath cave and its periphery, about one feet of fresh snowfall was experienced since last night.
Reports of snowfall were also recorded at Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni on traditional cave route.
There was however, considerable 6 degrees improvement in the minimum temperature. Against minus 11.7 degrees yesterday it was minus 5.6 degrees this morning.
Qazigund a south Kashmir town on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded minus 3.6 degrees against yesterdays minus 6 degrees.
There was also major improvement in minimum temperature in north Kashmir where Kupwara recorded 0.0 degrees against minus 4.4 degrees yesterday.
Light to moderate snowfall has also been experienced in upper reaches in the Kashmir valley.
Met spokesman said WD, originating in Arabia sea are approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said there would be moderate to very heavy snowfall on January 14 and 15.
Kargil with minus 15.4 degrees was the coldest in the Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state since December Ist because of snowfall and slippery road conditions.
Temperature at Leh, which recorded minus 20.2 degrees minimum yesterday, has improved by about six degrees. The minimum today was minus 15.2 degrees against yesterday’s minus 20.2 degrees.
