No end in sight to traffic jamms in Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMJU, Jan 12: Notwithstanding the claims of State Government of taking various measures of improving the traffic management in Jammu, there is no improvement in traffic scenario on city roads. Though the Jammu roads have been witnessing traffic chaos for years together, the situation has deteriorated with the coming Winter and hardly any day passes when there is no traffic jam in the City of Temples. The situation becomes more vulnerable especially on the days of festivals. The authorities are fully aware of the deteriorating traffic problem in the city but they have deliberately tried to ignore the same, alleges Ramesh Khullar a social activist. He said the people are taking to streets against the traffic jams and mismanagement of traffic police in the city but to no avail and it seems that no Government worth name exists in the state. The traffic chaos are witnessed daily in the city after the Darbar move as the number of vehicles increased to a large extent after the same, said Krishan Singh a driver. He said there should be a long term policy on the part of the government to overcome this problem but unfortunately then state has never thought in this regard. Quoting the official figures Singh said every year over 40,000 vehicles are added on city roads whose width remains the same as it was over 20 years back. The government needs to make a comprehensive policy to deal with the issue but it is totally sleeping and till date it has not come with any such a policy. The State Government is so non serious about tackling the issue that the Transport Department which needs a full fledged Minister is being looked after by a Minister which looks after two important ministries with the result he can’t devote the proper attention in tackling the problem. According to high placed sources the State Government which has been sleeping over the issue for over last six decades has now planning to bring a Bill in the state Assembly in coming budget session for constitution of Urban Mobility Transport Authority (UMTA). The UMTA which will be headed by Chief Secretary will have the members from all concerned departments for the better coordination among various departments. Sources said the Government which has drawn a lot of public criticism against the increasing traffic mess in the city is also decided to introduce the signals system in the city and other major towns. As the Transport Minister has himself admitted that the mess has been outcome of lack of transport policy, said that government is taking the services of RITES and other agencies for the same. Moreover lack of manpower with Traffic Police and failure of Government to widen the city roads and construction of more fly overs has also compounded the problem, sources added.
