| JU campus tense as rumours agog over students’ elections | | |
Jammu, Nov 08 Amidst rumours that the Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo has given his informal nod for the maiden students’ elections in Jammu University, different groups and student organizations have intensified their activities on the campus. In first phase, elections of Class Representatives (CRs) are going on and various departments have completed the process. Though there is no official circular from the Department of Students Welfare for the same, there are rumours that the University authorities have decided to conduct indirect elections for the JU students’ body through CRs. It may be recalled that Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo has already agreed to conduct the University students’ elections through Class Representatives, sources within the university told News Agency of Kashmir, preferring anonymity. An extraordinary enthusiasm is being seen among aspirants for the presidential candidates and their supporters who are leaving no stone unturned to secure a future place in active politics. While some student organizations have joined hands with a strategy to field a common candidate for the presidential post, a few, who have no affiliation with any organization, are also in race. However, what was the matter of apprehension became a reality yesterday when rival groups of the students clashed in the campus over the issue of election for CR. The PG Department of Buddhist Studies and the Law Department witnessed scuffle among the supporters of rival candidates, which followed police intervention. Though, the situation was diffused by the Dean Students Welfare Dr P S Pathania, the incidents sounded an alert for the University authorities who directed all the PG departments to postpone the election process till further order. Since the Vice-Chancellor is also out of station, the actual position with regard to the election process would be clarified only after his arrival next week, sources said. If given a go ahead, this would be for the first time in history of the Jammu University that students will elect their representative.
