PCC functionaries, legislators call on Chidambaram, Antony | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 12: In war of nerves between the two factions of Congress, a delegation comprising senior leaders and legislators of the J&K Congress today called on Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister AK Antony today and strongly advocated continuation of Prof Saif-uDin Soz as president of the PCC in the larger interests of the party as also for strengthening the coalition government in the state. The Congress leaders also pleaded that elements that have been creating 'indiscipline' within the party should not be encouraged in order to ensure proper order and discipline in all the cadres. Following coalition dharma, they said, is supreme but it needs to be 'reciprocated' by honouring the viewpoint of the Congress in major decisions. The group of senior leaders and functionaries who have been camping in New Delhi for some days today called on these senior ministers of the Union government whose position and say matters in the organizational matters as well. Sources said numbering over 40 members, though these local Congress leaders called on the two cabinet ministers with a specific purpose of countering the allegations and complaints made recently by leaders of another group with regard to functioning of PCC and related matters, they also discussed general matters of governance and role of Congress in the coalition as major alliance partner. Sources said that the delegation which was large in terms of numbers in comparison to the group which met the High Command last month, made this assertion that complaints with regard to dissatisfaction of PCC functioning were baseless. They asserted that Prof Soz as chief of the organization in the state had helped work party as a single cohesive unit with unity at all levels and his continuation would not only help make party much stronger at the grass root level but also make the bonds between the coalition partners stronger. The senior functionaries of PCC strongly advocated that Prof Soz be re nominated as head of the party in J&K in the larger interests of the party as well as to protect the interests of the organizational matters and its functioning in this highly sensitive state. There may be some areas of differences expressed by some people but those creating indiscipline in the name of differences need not be encouraged, the Congress leaders put their view point before the ministers in separate meetings at New Delhi. However, the leaders of this faction did not express any grouse against anyone nor named anyone in their elaborate discussion with the party stalwarts, sources added. Sources further said that the Congress leaders also talked about the functioning of the coalition government in J&K and opined though the ties between the alliance partners were smooth but in order to make the relations stronger and understanding better in times to come, the Congress cannot afford to see its interests getting ignored or overlooked nor can it see the party getting marginalized in key matters or decisions taken by the government. "The element of trust has to maintained and it was for both the partners to keep that trust while adhering to coalition dharma ", the Congress leaders conveyed to the Union cabinet ministers and added that these steps were imperative lest the party loses ground in the state. The delegation comprised PCC vice presidents , general secretaries ,district presidents , legislators besides Vice chairmen of some Boards. |
