Joyous Lohri witnessed with swing in moods | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu Jan 13: The Lohri celebrations throughout the region today witnessed impacting mood swings among the different age groups here, young reaching door to door seeking Lohri gifts while elders stayed home to observe the occasion recalling their good old times. Though the celebration and observance remained conspicuous of the devoid of the lore that was earlier the basic and most important function, yet the celebrations were quite upbeat with children and some young also trying to resurrect the occasion to some happy moments. Jammuites somehow wore a festive outlook as the city decked up with dry fruits and other gifts signaled ushering of a new season falling after the Hindus celebration of the occasion. Jammuities got a respite from the bone-chilling cold as the day time temperature rose by 4-5 degrees. On Thursday Jammu basked under sunshine. Since morning people were seen involved in last minute shopping for Lohri. Shops selling til (sesame), jaggery, peanuts, popcorn etc. were experiencing boon in sales. Traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crop, Lohri is celebrated with mirth and enjoyment. It is also believed that ‘Lohri’ also marks the end of extreme wintery conditions. People celebrate the occasion with feasting, exchange of gifts and songs and dances around bonfires late into the night. Going by the traditional celebrations, in Jammu kids were hopping from house to house for gifts chanting, ‘Lori-Do-Lori, Sunder Munderya Ho etc.’ Pradesh Youth Congress led by R S Pathania, senior vice-president celebrated Lohri with inmates of Bal Niketan, Ambphalla, Jammu. The Youth Congress activists gifted biscuits, toffees, chocolates, groundnuts and other eatables to the inmates of the Bal Niketan and further vowed to take special care in the all-round development of these children. Pathania, while addressing the Youth Congress activists and the inmates said that the purpose of celebrating Lohri with these children was to transcend a signal that youth Congress, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi wants to work for the upliftment of neglected sections of the society. The activists of Trikuta Nagar Welfare Society, ward number 53 also celebrated the Lohri festival with full traditional fervour. The society president, Vinod Mahajan remarked, “Lohri festival is an important component of our composite cultural heritage which strengthens the bonds of communal harmony and brotherhood. Lohri gives us an opportunity to exchange good wishes and pray for the betterment of the society.” A large number of people gathered outside temple at ‘Khow wali Gali’, Sector-1 and attended the Lohri celebrations with Lohri bonfires. The volunteers of Mother India, an NGO celebrated Lohri festival with the children of Bal Ashram, R.S.Pura. S.H.O, Police Station, R.S.Pura, S. Gurmeet Singh, was the chief guest on the occasion. The volunteers of the NGO burnt the traditional fire and got the eatables (which included Mungfali, Rewari, Pop-corns etc.) distributed among the children of the Bal Ashram through the kind hands of the Chief guest. All the children of the Bal Ashram felt jubilant on celebrating Lohri with the volunteers of the NGO. Meanwhile National Secular Forum, R.S.Pura Unit organized a programmed and celebrated Lohri with Jawans of 35th Battalion BSF, Who come from different parts of the country, at Octroi Post in RS Pura sector. The Youth Congress activists gifted biscuits, toffees, chocolates, groundnuts, ‘gachak’, ‘raouris’ to the inmates of the Bal Niketan and further vowed to take special care in the all-round development of these children in the times to come.
The Border Security Force personnel celebrated the festival of 'Lohri' at the India-Pakistan border in Jammu here on wednesday braving harsh weather conditions.
On the occasion large number of BSF personnel got together and danced to the tunes of drum beats and popular punjabi numbers to celebrate the festival with fanfare wearing spirit of camaraderie.
The Lohri is celebrated with fervour and gaiety so that troops, who cannot go home during the festival, do not miss their families.
"We are celebrating this festival here with great enthusiasm for our soldiers, who are like our children. We want that they should not miss their homes and families," said senior BSF officer taking a break from celebrations at the octroi post.
"We want that they should feel as if they are celebrating this festival with their families. And you have seen their excitement here," he added.Large number of local vilagers also joined the festivities at the octroi post and together prayed for the peace and prosperity in the region.In Jammu the festival of Lohiri was celebrated at numerous places to mark the change of weather. International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) celebrated the Lohri with SOS home at Gol Gujral, Talab Tillo. They distributed groundnuts and sweets among kids and presented cultural show including Gidda and dances. Chairperson Vanita Thakur greeted SOS kids and threw light on the importance of Lohri festival in Indian culture.
