| 21 domestic violence cases in New Year's first week | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 14: Twenty one incidents of domestic violence were reported in the first week of 2011 in the winter capital here. All these complaints were lodged with the women cell police station, police sources said. Of them, six cases were settled on the spot, the sources added. Sources said the maximum complaints received were from Samba, Doda and Poonch districts. "Counselling is the preferred approach being adopted in the women cell to settle the disputes among the couples but if the situation does not improve, a case is then registered," the sources added. Sources said most of the cases were being registered under 'harassment' as Domestic Violence Act (DVA) was yet to beimplemented in the state. Though the Bill on Domestic Violence Act was passed by the Jammu andKashmir Legislative Assembly in 2010, it was yet to be enforced. Meanwhile in 2010, of the 1,028 complaints received, 55 cases were registered, six were referred to court, 944 were settled through compromise. Only 23 cases were still pending. |
