Srinagar-Jammu national highway closed due to snow
1/15/2011 12:03:22 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 14 : The 300-km-long Srinagar Jammu national highway, linking Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country was closed due to snowfall and slippery road conditions.
The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway also remained closed since December 1 last year due to heavy snowfall between Sonmarg and Menamarg.
A traffic police spokesman told here that the highway has been closed because of snowfall last night and today.
About a foot of fresh snowfall was recorded at Jawahar tunnel, highest point on the highway. At Shatannallah about half a foot of snowfall was recorded till 2 pm, he said adding it was still snowing heavily in the entire belt.
He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintainence of the highway has already pressed into service men and sophisticated machines to make the road traffic worthy soon.
However, fresh snowfall was hampering the snow clearance operation.
He said no vehicle was today allowed from Srinagar or Jammu on the highway. Only one-way traffic was being allowed on the highway in view of the slippery road conditions and to avoid traffic jams for the past two weeks. Today vehicles were scheduled to ply from Jammu to Srinagar.
Official sources said hundreds of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials, are stranded on other side of the Jawhar tunnel. They said fresh vehicles would be allowed on the highway only after the stranded vehicles would be cleared.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed since December 1 last year following snowfall and slipper road conditions at several places.
Zojila pass on the highway had so far received more than ten feet of snowfall. The state and centre has already agreed to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it all weather road.
