Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 14 : Union Home Secretary, GK PIllai’s statement on troop reduction in Jammu Kashmir evoked mixed reaction in the Valley. While Hurriyat (M) and National Conference welcomed the statement; Geelani refused to comment.
Pillai stated at New Delhi Friday that government of India was considering reduction of troops by 25% in Jammu Kashmir beginning this year as a confidence building measure (CBM).
The chairman of Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umer Farooq welcomed the statement. “It is a positive sign. New Delhi should to respond positively to the amalgam’s proposal of reduction of troops in residential areas. Kashmiris would welcome any step which would be aimed at the resolution of the vexed problem. New Delhi should take steps to demilitarize Kashmir to make conducive atmospheres for talks,” he said.
Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik said: “Unless the announcement is implemented in letter and spirit, it won’t make any difference.”
Malik said such announcement had been made in past without any results.
The Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani refused to comment. “ I cannot comment on it now”, he said.
Like Yasin Malik , the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mahbooba Mufti also sought implementation of the announcement in letter and spirit.
“It shouldn’t be a cosmetic exercise but should be implemented on ground. Government failed to implement 8-point formula announced previously on ground.”
She said the state government was entirely dependent on Army. “It (state government) has failed completely. Instead of reduction of troops in Kashmir, they demand more. State government has failed on all fronts. Even court orders aren’t being honored and youth are being arrested instead of releasing them”, she said.
The Jama’t-e-Islami chief, Sheikh Muhammad Hassan said that his party wanted complete demilitarization of Jammu Kashmir. “If the announcement has been made in that direction, then it is a positive step.”
Jamiat-e- Ahalihadees president, Moulana Showkat Ahmad while welcoming the announcement said, “Reduction of troops can pave way for the resolution of the issue.”
Senior National Conference leader and Member Parliament, Dr Mehboob Beg welcomed the announcement. “It isn’t the final solution but will pave way for it,” he said. “Kashmir needs a political solution.”
