NCP for prioritizing expansion of Jammu airport | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 15: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit has urged Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel to give priority to the expansion plan to make Jammu Airport an international one. Leaders of NCP led by its state president Thakur Randhir Singh met Union Minister and urged him to take personal interest in the issue as it will be beneficial to thousands of pilgrims who visit the Holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. Singh demanded that in view of heavy air traffic at Jammu airport and increasing number of pilgrims and tourists, there is need for immediate need to construct airport which should be named as Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Airport. NCP has also demanded establishment of a Commercial Pilot Training Academy at Kathua to provide opportunity to the youth from Jammu and Kashmir and other northern states to get best training. Party has said that Airport expansion plan is long pending and despite repeated announcements made by the successive state government, work has not started on it. If the project gets go ahead the Airport Authority of India (AAI) will be able to increase the length of the runway from present 6700 feet to 8000 feet allowing bigger aircrafts like Airbus to land at the airport, which is not possible at present as the runway length is small for the operation of the bigger aircrafts.
