Heavy snowfall in Kashmir throws life out of gear | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Jan 15: The Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country for the second consecutive day today due to closure of 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway following heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions. Life was thrown out of gear in the Kashmir valley, where moderate to very heavy snowfall since yesterday snapped power, road communication and telephone services. Keran, Karnah and Machil in north Kashmir also remained cut off from the rest of the state due to snowfall. A traffic police official told here that the highway remained closed due to heavy snowfall between Qazigund to Banihal. About two feet of snowfall was recorded at Jawahar tunnel, the highest point on the highway, the only road linking the Valley with the rest of the country. He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has pressed into machines and men to clear the snow on the highway. However, no vehicle would be allowed from Jammu or Srinagar until vehicles stranded on the highway were cleared, official sources said. They said hundreds of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essential commodities, remained stranded on the other side of the highway. A number of other roads, leading to far-flung and remote areas also remained closed due to snowfall. Tree tops, roofs, roads, parks and electric poles turned white as the people woke up this morning in the summer capital, where about one feet of snowfall was recorded till 0800 hrs. Though the district administration had pressed into service machines to clear the snow on main roads, almost all link roads remained closed. The entire Srinagar city was without power since last night due to damage caused to transmission lines after trees and electric poles were uprooted. It was the heaviest snowfall during this year, official sources said adding earlier on December 30 last year about six inches of snowfall was recorded. Reports of heavy to very heavy snowfall were also received from all parts of the Valley. About two feet of fresh snowfall was recorded at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir. Heavy snowfall was received in the upper reaches, including Affarwat, Khilanmarg and Seven Springs, much to the delight of adventure lovers and skiers. About two to three feet of snowfall was recorded in the upper reaches in Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora districts in north Kashmir. A report from health resort of Pahalgam said about one feet of snowfall was recorded there. Very heavy snowfall was received at holy Amarnath cave shrine and its peripheries at Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Panjterni and Pisso top. Heavy to very heavy snowfall was also recorded at Shopian, Pulwama and other hilly areas in south Kashmir. Official sources said power supply remained off in almost all parts of the Valley because of the damage caused to transmission lines. Though the Power Development Department has geared up its men and machinery, it will take longer this time to restore the electric supply in the valley, the officials said. The first priority will be essentials services, including hospitals and Water Supply Schemes, they said. |
