Jammu-Sgr road remains shut for 2nd day due to snow | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 15: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which links Kashmir with rest of the country, remained closed to vehicular traffic for the second day today due to accumulation of snow at several places. The road was closed Friday due to heavy snowfall on Patnitop-Batote stretch and in Banihal area. Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, load carriers and light motor vehicles, were stranded Udhampur onwards. Police sources said the work was on to remove those vehicles to safety which were trapped in snow in Patnitop, Batote and Banihal areas. The resulting slippery road conditions had further added to the problem, the sources added. Sources said the men and machinery of border roads organisation were working round-the-clock to clear the snow and restore traffic on the highway at the earliest. However, the fresh snowfall, which occured intermittently last night and today at several places on the highway, made their task difficult, the sources added. Directions had been issued to traffic police and other agencies engaged in the road clearance to ensure the parking of stranded passenger vehicles and trucks in safer zones so that people did not face cold conditions, the sources added. Sources said most of them were stopped in Chanderkote, Ramban, and Udhampur areas. Meanwhile, due to a heavy blanket of fog enveloping Jammu, vehicle movement was slow in the city. The fog also disrupted train traffic as over seven trains reached and left Jammu one to four hours behind schedule since yesterday. Chilly winds were blowing in Jammu city, resulting in extreme cold conditions. |
