On J&K troop reduction, Gen Singh clarifies he talked about army | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Jan 15: A day after his utterances on troop reduction in Jammu and Kashmir, army chief, Gen VK Singh today clarified that while he spoke about army personnel, home secretary GK Pillai referred to para-military forces. His comments were largely seen countering Pillai, who Friday said there would be 25 per cent troop reduction in the state. "I think there was some confusion. What Pillai said was concerning para-military forces. What I was talking of was army," he told reporters here, seeking to clear the perception that the two were talking in different voices. "No person from home ministry will say about army as it is under the purview of the defence ministry. I am quite sure that home secretary knows about it and talks only about para-military forces, Singh said. Hours after Pillai's statement, he had said, "We have not yet felt that we have to cut down our forces. If they want to cut down para-military and police forces, I won't say anything." The army chief today noted that any decisions regarding reduction of troop strength in the valley would be taken by the unified command headquarters (UHQ), which was headed by chief minister Omar Abdullah. "Where they want to take out people, it is up to them. Whatever input is required, it will be provided by the UHQ. I have got no conflict or argument with anybody on this issue," Gen Singh said and added, "So far as army is concerned, I am quite convinced as what army is supposed to do." "But, with regard to the army, we have deployed troops after analysing our requirements on the border and the Line of Control with Pakistan. Similarly, in the interiors, to maintain peace and carry out operations against the militants, we have some troops. As of now, we do not feel we should reduce the numbers," Singh added. |
