JAMMU, Jan 15: Amid unfounded allegations of corruption, Jail authorities of Jammu and Kashmir are all set to free six prisoners on the forthcoming Republic Day while 10 other who have been granted life sentence are likely to be shifted to other jails in the region. Sources said that the ten prisoners who are being shifted include Bagwan Dass of Jammu, Karanjit Singh alias Dolly of Simble Camp, Joginder Lal of Jammu, Ashwani Kumar of Tarlo-kpur, Sanjay Arora of Gorkh Nagar, Bodh Raj of Shakti Nagar, Naresh Singh of Kunjwani,Joginder Paul of RS Pura,Balbir Singh of Digiana and Harpreet Singh. They added that all these have been granted life sentence and have also spent nearly 20 years in the central jail.
Sources disclosed that despite maintaining good behaviour, they are being shifted. They further said that relatives and families of these prisoners are perturbed over this development. They have begun terming it as punishment. Relatives hold the view that the jail authorities should have granted them remission for their good behaviour.
According to jail sources, central jail head has recommended their shifting to other jails under letter No CJJKB/05/14518 dated January 7, 2011. Sources disclosed that a copy of the letter has also sent to IGP (Prisons). Repeated efforts to contact jail superintendent Rajni Sehgal for her comments failed. Anjum, however, said that he is yet to receive copy of the letter since he is on leave.
However, he affirmed that lifers could be shifted to other jails only in exceptional cases. To make matters worse, families of these 10 prisoners have begun alleging that their children are being shifted to other jails because they refused to grease palms of some jail authorities. Families are further saying that government should seek an explanation from jail authorities for this behaviour.
