2nd Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup Football starts today | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 17: Organised by the Youth wing of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference under the aegis of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA), the 2nd Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup Football Championship shall start tomorrow at Mini Stadium, Parade here. About fortnight-long knock-out event shall be declared open by the Minister for Industries, Surjit Singh Slathia at 3 pm. In the opening match, slated to be held at the same venue, Jammu Sports-A shall take on Jammu United at 2.30 pm. Four teams, including the defending champion, J&K Police-A and runners-up, Food and Supplies as also two unknown sides have been given bye in the two preliminary rounds. These four top teams have to play directly in the quarterfinals. “By organizing this championship, we aim to promote and popularize the game of football in Jammu and Kashmir. Different committees have been set up by involving experts in the field to see that the event is held in a smooth and impartial manner,” said organizing secretary of the event, Surinder Singh Bunty. This championship has been sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited, uhlsport and Rakesh Jewellers besides a host of other contributors to the kitty of the organisers. “Since all the top clubs and departmental teams of the state have already been reflected in the fixture, efforts are being made to romp in a couple of teams from outside the state to make it a competitive event,” informed the organizing secretary. The participating teams: Pool-A: J&K Police, Jammu Spots-A, Jammu United, DFA Udhampur, Mussa Club, J&K Bank, Young Heroes’, NGR Club, DFA Poonch, Sainik Colony Club. Pool-B: Young Rovers’, Vijay Club, Churchil Brothers, Engineers XI, J&K Forests, Young Star, DFA Samba, DFA Kathua, Param FC and Food and Supplies.
Football gains ground in Jammu
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the tournament, Surinder Singh Bunty, who is also resident secretary of the JKFA Jammu wing, disclosed that the number of affiliated clubs in Jammu district has increased from existing 22 to 50 during the last some time. Interestingly, as many as 15 sub-junior clubs have also registered themselves with the wing justifying that the game of football is gaining ground in the Winter Capital of the state.
