Highway made operational for traffic with "tonnes of salt"
1/18/2011 12:23:30 AM
JAMMU: Tonnes of salt has been spread on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to make it motorable after heavy snowfall in the region left many stretches slippery.
"We have a difficult time as freezing of the road makes it highly slippery, where controlling a vehicle becomes difficult. So, we spread several tonnes of salt to keep highway motorable," Senior Superintendent of Police, National Highway, Kifayat Hyder told .
The frozen ice condition on the road are done away by spreading salt, which is the oldest method of not only clearing the highway or roads from snow but to make them motorable.
The ice can still be seen on the road stretches in Patnitop, Kud and Banihal area of the highway, he said, adding it slows down the traffic, which is already moving at snail's pace.
"Work is going on round the clock. There was heavy jam yesterday," the SSP said.
One-way traffic is plying on the highway from Jammu to Srinagar, while no vehicle would be allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu, he said.
Meanwhile, inter-district roads Batote-Kishtwar highway and Rajouri-Poonch highway are closed for the vehicular traffic due to landslides, police officials said.
Batote-Kishtwar highway got blocked due to landslide at Drabshalla yesterday and over 200 vehicles are stranded, they said, adding that Rajouri-Poonch highway was blocked following landslide at Dera-Ki Gali and Surankote area today.
Efforts are on to reopen the highways for vehicular traffic, they said.
