Rajouri is 'silkworm rearing' district of J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 18: Border district of Rajouri is coming up as "silkworm rearing" district with high potential in sericulture of Jammu and Kashmir. Rajouri is coming up as silkworm rearing district and it has high potential in sericulture. More than 5,400 families are associated with silkworm rearing there, they said adding that annually 6,500 ounces of silkworm seed is reared by these families, generating an annual income of Rs 225 lakh, they said. Topography of the district, being sub-tropical, and the mulberry plant, being deep rooted can sustain in these conditions well therefore economies of sericulture has an edge over other activities, they said. There are 20 department mulberry nurseries existing in the district where 2.65 lakh to 3 lakh mulberry plants are produced every year for distribution among the farmers, they said. There are also 33 department mulberry blocks spread over an area of 45 hectares where 1.10 lakh of mulberry plants are existing, they said. Keeping in potential of the district, the department is in collaboration with Central Silk Board and has been implementing a prestigious project under cluster promotion programme, they said
