Dal freezes, Gulmarg coldest in Kashmir valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Jan 18: Cold wave swept Kashmir with Kargil, recording coldest night of the winter so far when minimum dipped to minus 21 degrees Celsius. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg remained coldest in the Kashmir valley, where famed Dal Lake, taps and other water bodies remained frozen due to sub zero temperature. A metrological department spokesman said Leh recorded minus 9.8 degrees against yesterday's minus 14.4 degrees. Leh and its adjoining areas witnessed fresh snowfall this morning. People in Kargil witnessed coldest night of the winter so far when the minimum dipped further to minus 21 degrees. Earlier, lowest in the border town was recorded minus 17 degrees yesterday. Water supply in the entire Ladakh region remained suspended since November last year. The step has been taken to avoid bursting of pipes due to frozen form of water. People were being provided water through tankers. However, majority people use spring water in their respective areas which remains hot during winter and cold in summer. Temperature in upper reaches remained between minus 15 to minus 35 degrees in the Ladakh region, which remained cut off from rest of the country due to closure of Srinagar-Leh and Leh-Manali national highways following heavy snowfall. However, Drass-Kargil-Leh road remained open during the winter also despite snowfall. State and Central government have already decided to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make the Srinagar-Leh highway an all weather road.
