No respite from cold in valley, Pahalgam freezes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Jan 19: While there was no respite from cold in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, Pahalgam with minus 14.6 degree and Kargil with minus 22 degree were coldest. Biting cold, coupled with frequent power failure and lack of transport facilities, particularly in the evening, affected normal life in Srinagar. Majority lanes and bylanes remained slippery due to minus 5.2 degree minimum temperature. Kargil, a border town in Ladakh region on Srinagar-Leh national highway remained coldest in the state with minus 22 degree, a degree below than yesterday. There was a considerable drop in the temperature at Leh where the minimum dipped to minus 19 degrees against yesterday's minus 9.8 degree. A Met department spokesman said that there was no major change in the weather though the minimum has improved at some places but dropped in other areas in the Kashmir valley. He said that due to open sky during the night, minimum dipped to minus 14.6 degrees at Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine. Health resort was coldest in the Kashmir valley after the minimum dropped by more than 6 notches against yesterday's minus 8.2 degrees. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir also recorded a fall in the minimum temperature from minus 11.7 degree yesterday to minus 13.6 degree this morning.
