“NC fears political middle ground”
Pushes people out of democratic system for power: Mehbooba
1/19/2011 10:40:25 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 19: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said the
National Conference had always been uncomfortable with mainstream political opposition and had developed a vested interest in perpetuating trouble and instability in the state.
Addressing a large public gathering held in Anantnag as part of party’s state wide demonstrations she said the ruling party was interested only in holding the state as a personal estate of a family and for that it had bartered away everything ranging from people’s dignity to water resources.
Mehbooba said historically the NC leadership had been able only to help replace the autocratic rule of Maharaja by its own dynastic succession. For facilitating that objective it had always used tags of, anti nationalism against its opponents, some being pushed to Pakistan and the rest given choice of facing official or the party terror orm fall in line. She said the same treatment was meted out to the Muslim
United Forum (MUF) in 1987 and people were forced to pick up gun.
She said NC got nervous with any competition within the democratic space and schemed to retain power by pushing people out of the system to have a solo monopoly over the power structure.
Explaining the perspective of the struggle launched by the PDP,
Mehbooba said the people here had suffered for too long to be fooled by hollow promises. “When things flare up in Kashmir as they did in three consecutive summers since 2008 the center shows urgency in resolving the issue” she said and regretted that once the fire fightingis over “we are again neglected and left to our fate and the security apparatus”.
Meanwhile, PDP’s protest was also reported from other parts of the state including Jammu, Samba, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda ,Udhampur and other areas.
Addressing a press conference here, PDP leader and former Minister
Rangil Singh said that as part of its statewide programme, activists of PDP today held demonstrations at all district headquarters of Jammu province against alleged failure of the state government in providing basic amenities to the people.
At Samba, demonstration was held under the leadership of former Rajya
Sabha member Trilok Singh Bajwa while in Kathua, the protests were led by party General Secretary Thakur Balbir Singh.
PDP activists gheraoed Mini Secretariat Kathua by holding a massive protest rally against the misgovernance and failure of state coalition government on all fronts.
Other senior party leaders namely Ved Mahajan and Daman Bhasin led the protest demonstrations at Doda and Udhampur respectively.
At Rajouri, demonstration was held under the leadership of party MLA from Darhal Choudhary Zulfikar and Fallail Singh, while at Poonch state Secretary of the party Choudhary Hussain Ali Wafa along with MLA
Mendhar Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan and MLC Murtaza Khan led the party workers.
