Traffic police faces shortage of men to regulate traffic | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 19: The traffic wing of state police is faced with acute shortage of men to regulate vehicular traffic on the roads. Though the number of vehicles in the state has been increasing with the passage of every day, the number of men entrusted to regulate traffic remains the same. There were only 700 traffic cops in 10 districts of the region, according to official sources. Sources said one reason behind tragic road accidents in the region's hilly areas was also the scarcity of traffic police personnel in those areas. The presence of requisite traffic police staff in accident prone areas could help to reduce the number of road accidents to a large extent, the sources added. Sources said their number was also inadequate on the city roads as a result of which occasional jams were witnessed on almost every road stretch in the winter capital. To regulate traffic from Kunjwani to Jhajjar Kotli, traffic police had only 400 men. In the rural zone, ie from Lakhanpur to Kunjwani, there were only 150 traffic police personnel while their strength on the national highway zone, ie from Jhajjar Kotli to Banihal, was also 150.Traffic police IG Hemant Kumar Lohia said efforts were being made to increase the strength of traffic police personnel to regulate vehicular traffic.
