Jammu leaders responsible for the neglect of Doda, Poonch & Rajouri | Opponents Of trifurcation -- III | | NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 19: The critics of those in Jammu who advocate trifurcation as a lasting solution to the Jammu problem as well as other issues facing the state say that Jammu leaders are responsible for the neglect of the Muslim-majority districts in the province? How? It's not true. It's politically and communally-motivated charge and it has no basis whatsoever. The fact is that most of the Jammu-based leaders have been consistently struggling to obtain justice for the province and its people, irrespective of their political affiliations and religious denominations. So much so that they have been saying that Doda, Poonch and Rajouri are more discriminated against as compared to Jammu district and accusing the Kashmiri leadership of playing with and exploiting the religious sensitivities of the Muslims of the areas for vote-bank politics and perpetuating the Valley domination over Jammu province. There is no doubt whatever that the people of Doda, Poonch and Rajouri areas have suffered more and that even today they lack in every sphere, including even civic amenities. But the question is: Who has ignored them and overlooked their needs? It's the Kashmiri leadership and the local leadership, including the legislators, who are squarely responsible for the neglect of these areas and the people who inhabit these areas. The local leadership has never asserted itself or projected the case of their respective constituencies during the district development meetings, which are chaired by Cabinet Ministers. Nor have the ministers belonging to these areas ever played their role during the Cabinet meetings. They have all along danced to the tunes of their Kashmiri masters and sacrificed their people to remain in the good books of their Kashmiri masters in order to fulfill their own selfish interests. The local leadership, which is a divided lot, selfish to the core and irresponsible, has played havoc with the people of the Doda, Poonch and Rajuori areas and not those whom the critics of trifurcation accuse of perpetrating injustice on these areas. It would no exaggeration to say that it is the Kashmiri leaders and their cronies in Jammu who have unleashed a vilification and misinformation campaign in order to weaken the empower-Jammu province-movement by playing a communal card or by giving a religious turn to an issue of socio-economic and political importance. There are a few so-called intellectuals in Jammu province, including the Jammu University, who also accuse the Jammu leadership of ignoring Doda, Poonch and Rajouri areas, but, remember, they are part of the separatist movement. The opponents of the protagonists of trifurcation say that Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, Rajouri and Poonch are Muslim-majority districts and, hence, they would not endorse the trifurcation demand. They are absolutely wrong. Their whole approach is communal. They divide the people on religious lines only to play a mischief and help the Kashmiri leadership play nefarious games in the Jammu province. These critics overlook the fact that the population in the Doda, Kishatwar and Ramban districts is evenly balanced and that half of the tehsils in these districts are Hindu-majority and half Muslim-majority and that it is not only the Muslims of the areas who have suffered but the Hindus of the areas too have suffered because they live under the same set-up. The story of Rajouri district is no different. Right from Jammu city to Rajouri town it is overwhelmingly Hindu-dominated. Sunderbani, Kalakot, Nowshera, and even Rajouri city are Hindu-majority. Poonch is the only district in Jammu province that could be legitimately termed as a Muslim-majority district. The fact of the matter is that the proportion of the Hindu and Muslim population in the Jammu province is 70:30. Why should the trifurcation demand be communalized? That the people of Jammu province have suffered at the hands of the Kashmiri leadership is a fact and it needs to be recognized by everyone in Jammu province. The sooner it is recognized the better. It would be better for the critics to revise their opinion and make common cause with the suffering people of Jammu province. They would do well to remember that the solution to the problem facing the people of Jammu province lies in their separation from Kashmir and separation is imminent. (Concluded) |
