People continue to shiver in Valley, Kargil cold at-18 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR Jan 20 : People continued to shiver in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region as there was no respite from the bitting cold, freezing snow and water on roads making them slippery. In view of the accidents due to slippery road conditions, the authorities have appealed to drivers to drive slowly and pedestrians were also warned to take extra care while walking on roads as more than 150 people were injured due to fall during the past one week in the Kashmir valley. There was no let up in the cold wave conditions though the minimum temperature has slightly improved in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region. But due to cloudy weather, the day had become cold due to icy cold winds. Kargil, a border town in Ladakh region, with minus 18 degree remained coldest though the minimum was up by 4 notches this morning against yesterday when it was minus 22. Yesterday the Kargil Courier operated between Kargil-Jammu, Kargil-Srinagar and airlifted more than 200 passengers who were stranded for the past two weeks. Despite two degree improvement in the minimum temperature at Leh, it was still minus 17 degree this morning. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort of Pahalgam remained coldest in the Valley, where the sky was cloudy resulting in drop in the maximum temperature. At Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, the night temperature was recorded at minus 11.7 degree. However, this was three degree up against yesterday. Coldest night so far at Pahalgam was recorded on January 16, when the mercury dipped to minus 16.1 degree. The minimum temperature at Gulmarg, offering worlds highest skiing point, connected with Gandola Cable Car (GCC), has also improved slightly. Against yesterdays minus 13.6 degree, it was minus 11.6 degree this morning. The lowest minimum temperature recorded at Gulmarg so far was minus 14.2 degree. Even though the minimum temperature has improved in the summer capital, Srinagar, but people continued to shiver as Dal Lake, nallahs and other water bodies remained frozen. The minimum temperature recorded in the capital city was minus 4.8 degree against yesterday’s minus 5.2 degree. Snow and water on roads, particularly in lanes and bylanes, had frozen, making them very slippery.
