Functioning of cooperative institutions reviewed

Jammu, Jan 20- Minister of State for Cooperative and Higher Education, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma today said that cooperatives play an important role in strengthening market access and controlling price line besides holding an assurance of a genuine transaction.
The Minister was addressing a review meeting of officers of Cooperative Department, convened to take stock of various activities of the department for providing best possible consumer facilities to the people of the State.
He said an amount of Rs. 1.40 crore has been provided to 452 cooperative institutions where as Rs. 59.13 lakh were released to 454 institutions under Managerial Subsidy Scheme. He said the cooperative institutions have about 700 godowns available for stocking essential commodities in various districts of the State.
Under the scheme, financial assistance is being provided to Cooperative Marketing Societies, Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies, Consumer Stores, Vegetable Cooperatives and Dairy Cooperative Societies. An amount of Rs. 4.65 crore have been released in favour of these projects, recording an expenditure of over Rs. 278.74 lakh till December last year.
The Minister also discussed availability and distribution system of fertilizers to various intending societies, cooperatives and dealers as per seasonal requirement. In this regard, the Minister said that though Government is making all out efforts to provide timely fertilizers to the farmers but lot more needs to be taken for streamlining the system. He said a long term plan has to be worked out to address the grey areas. He said Government has introduced multi-agency approach in its distribution but still the maximum quantity of fertilizers is being supplied by cooperative institutions, creating a sense of confidence among the farmers .
The meeting was attended by Secretary, Cooperatives, Abdul Hamid Wani, Registrar Cooperatives, Mohammad Abass Dar, Managing Director Cooperatives, Arun Bakshi, Senior officers and district officers of Jammu province.
