| RTI activist attacked in Doda | | | Early Times Report
DODA, Jan 20: An RTI activist of Doda Safdar Ali was assaulted by a group of contractors on January 18 for allegedly seeking details of funds utilized by them in the construction of a village tank.
According to a handout issued here today, it has been stated that Safdar, a resident of Village Bhandoga in Doda district was assaulted by a group of contractors on Monday, 18th of January. It has been further said that Safdar Ali’s protest against misappropriation of funds for the construction of village tank was immediate trigger.
It all began with the collapse of a village tank, days after it was constructed. Safdar Ali and other RTI activists of the area lodged a strong protest with the local block office. Concerned BDO allegedly immediately pulled up contractors involved in the construction of tank for poor quality of their work. Days later, Safdar Ali was accosted by village Numberdar Sonaullah Kashmiri who threatened him with dire consequences if Safdar Ali chose to persist with his RTI related work.
Beaten black and blue Safdar Ali lodged an FIR with P.S.Thathri on Tuesday 18th January. Even though the FIR has been registered Safdar Ali is not too optimistic given the fact that no pre emptive action was taken even though he had apprised the S.H.O of the threats he had received well in advance.
Attacks on RTI activists seem to be becoming the norm. As many as 7 incidents involving attacks on RTI activists have come to light recently. And this number represents only the incidents that were highlighted by the media. The actual number, observers feel, is much higher.
