Omar for fast tracking urban schemes

JAMMU, Jan 20: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today reviewed progress on various projects under execution in Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Mission (JNNRUM) at a high level meeting here and directed the Housing Department for fast tracking projects to ensure early benefits to the people.
“There is urgent need to generate resources for completing the ongoing projects and ensuring basic amenities in urban areas”, he said and impressed upon the department to work out ways and means of making urban local bodies and municipal corporations financially self reliant. This, he said would help empowering these institutions and help holistic development in the cities and towns.
Chief Minister said that urban local bodies and Panchayats could deliver more purposefully and meaningfully when these are fully empowered and equipped with necessary paraphernalia of men and machinery. He said financial independence of these institutions is imperative in this direction and efforts are required to put in place measures and reforms for the purpose.
Suresh Kumar said that 93 projects under various schemes under JNNRUM have been sanctioned by the Government of India at a cost of Rs. 1227 crores. The work on these projects is on various stages of progress. He said State Government has also released Rs. 42.46 crores for these projects while the Centre Government has provided Rs. 372 crores.
Meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, Minister for Finance, Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister for PHE, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Minister for Rural Development, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Chief Secretary, S. S. Kapur, Principal Secretary PHE, A. K. Angurana, Principal Secretary Planning Khurishid Ganai, Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development, Suresh Kumar, Secretary Revenue, Ajaz Iqbal, Directors of Local Bodies, Kashmir and Jammu and other senior officers.
