U.N. Special Rapporteur meets SHRC chairperson | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 20: Special Rapporteur of United Nations Margaret Sekaggya today took stock of overall picture of Human Rights provisions of law applicable in the state, functioning of the Commission and work done by the commission in protecting and promoting the human rights. According to an official handout issued here today, the special rapporteur held meeting with Chairperson of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in his office. The meeting was arranged on the request of U.N. Special Rapporteur. The meeting was attended by other officials from either side. The meeting discussed the human rights matters in particular. As per the Secretary, J&K State Human Rights Commission Srinagar, U.N Special Rapporteur was interested to hear from the Commission; State human rights position of defenders of the rights, NGO’s and graph of human rights violations for last 3to 4 years over here. According to Secretary, it was pointed out by the Chairperson that the applicability/ non- applicability, areas where AFSPA operates, declaring particular area as disturbed area which are all policy matters and decision taken or to be taken by the Government of the State and at Centre in consultative mode. The commission as such has nothing to do with it, he said. She was further informed that while functioning of the commission is mirrored and given out by the report which the commission complies on annual basis and for the current year, same is under publication. However, last year’s, report on request was given to the Rapporteur team.
