Has Padgoanker failed detained militants?
1/21/2011 11:14:05 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 21: Noted journalist, Dileep Padgoanker who heads the three member team of New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir was highly impressed by the `positive response' shown by some detained militants in Srinagar's Central Jail during his first visit to the Valley.
Talking to media persons after the visit, Padgoanker had said: "The detained militants have a `peace plan' which they want to discuss with the interlocutors." The veteran journalist had even promised them an audience in future. The interlocutors are in the summer capital again. They seem desperate to meet the separatist leaders. "We are ready to meet the separatist leaders anytime and anywhere", Dileep said yesterday.
"If separatists have reservations in meeting us, they can send their demands in writing to us", he showed his desperation. The chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq responded today by rejecting his offer.
Syed Ali Geelani who heads his own version of the Hurriyat ignored the offer. His spokesperson issued a statement today stating that the octogenarian leader was scheduled to leave for Delhi on January 27 for treatment.
According to a renowned Valley based psychiatrist, detained militants are always in high spirits. They discuss future strategy in the jail and also make roadmaps for Kashmir settlement. But once they come out, they find no takers for their `hard work'. They find it very difficult to make an impact. Most of them `retire' from active politics to worry about the bread and butter issues.
The psychiatrist warns against raising hopes of the detained persons. "It takes them to a make believe world and after coming out of prison to face harsh realities of life, they feel isolated. This wreaks havoc with their psychology", he said.
Padgoanker, he said has done just that. "By promising them an interaction, he has made them feel `important'. And by not going to them again, he has disappointed them", he said. Kashmir has drastically changed during the past few years. The effigy of Syed Salah-ud-Din was torched. Geelani who super heads the movement has been made to explain his position twice during last year's summer unrest. If these two persons are taken to task by the people, what can the detained militants do? And Padgoanker is fully aware of this harsh reality.
