Nightlong works underway to raise bank's branch office | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Jan 21: In violation of categorical directions from J&K High Court, concrete works are reportedly underway on ground floor of Hotel Shahenshah at Boulevard to raise a fresh branch office for J&K Bank. Jammu & Kashmir State Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, that is responsible for disallowing any concrete works on and around the world famous Dal Lake, has been conveniently silent, if not hand-in-glove with the hotel owners. Informed sources revealed to Early Times that nightlong construction and renovation works, involving cement and concrete works, were currently underway on ground floor of Hotel Shahenshah on Boulevard. Sources said that a number of structure owners and traders in the green belt had brought it to the notice of the LAWDA authorities last week but nobody swung into action to get the fresh constructions and renovations stopped. Interim orders issued from time to time during hearing of a public interest litigation by J&K High Court, have imposed blanket ban on such constructions and renovation/ repair works in Dal Lake area as also in the green belt around its periphery. According to these sources, last year some officials of J&K Bank decided to shift the branch from existing Wani Enterprises building to Hotel Shahenshah after owner of the Wani Enterprises demanded incremental hike in monthly floor rentals. Over the last 15 years, bank has been paying rent of Rs 9.00 per sft of area to Wani Enterprises, who began demanding Rs 40.00 per sft. Then bank authorities refused to accept the demand and decided to set up fresh branch office at far higher rates at Hotel Shahenshah. Even as the bank authorities terminated the contract and assured the owners to vacate the premises within six months, they did not shift to the new premises. Sources said that abandoning the 15-year-old strong room at Wani Traders building, a fresh concrete strong room was coming up by night at Hotel Shahenshah. Vice Chairman of LAWDA Irfan Yasin was not reachable for comments. His junior officials insisted that Secretary and engineers were well aware of the violation and illegal constructions at Hotel Shahenshah but everybody had conveniently shut eyes. |
