A determined BJYM challenges govt to join Yatra | ‘No change in programme, come what may’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 21: Against a determined state government on not allowing BJYM plans to materialize, the BJP today challenged the former stating if it was so apprehensive and incapable of maintaining law and order, the party would itself ensure both- unfurling of tricolour at Lal Chowk and at the same time ensuring peace and order in the entire state.
Reiterating to go ahead with its plan of hoisting national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day, the Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM)-BJP’s youth wing-today said that there was “no change” in the programme despite J&K government’s warning that it will not allow any ceremony that tantamount to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the state. “Come what may, we will hoist the tricolour at any cost….We will go ahead with Rashtriya Ekta Yatra to Kashmir and hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk even as Omar government has decided to stop us,” BJYM general secretary and Patna MLA Nitin Naveen said in a determined tone at a press conference here today. Accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of toeing the line of and “siding” with separatists, the BJYM challenged him to join the tricolour hoisting or else resign. “Omar has taken oath under this national flag. And now he is disrespecting it. He should resign as he has no right to be in chair and in the same breath show dishonour for national flag……. We invite him as well as Prime Minister to come and take part in this movement,” Naveen said, adding “it is hoisting of the tricolour and not that of BJP’s party flag”. “There will be no change in the programme. We are not going to stop short of hoisting tricolour at Lal Chowk, where national flag was disrespected during the 2010 summer agitation. We want to restore sanctity of the tricolour at the same venue,” he said. Naveen claimed that “there is no opposition from civil society and general public from Kashmir Valley”. “The statement of Omar is unfortunate. He is stopping a movement for unity and integrity of the country and nationalism. His statement reflects the separatists’ point of view,” the lawmaker alleged. He criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for “allowing Omar to stop hoisting tricolour at Lal Chowk.” It is worthwhile to mention here that during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday, it was decided that no programme which has the potential of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in J&K will be allowed. The state government directed the administrative and police officials to ensure that all measures are taken so that the law and order in the state is not disturbed in the run up to the Republic Day.
Vigil being increased at airports too ……. Against the backdrop of this verbal warfare between political parties, the security and other Government agencies have been directed to strengthen their vigil on Jammu and Srinagar airports so that not a single BJYM activist was able to travel to Lal Chowk for hoisting the national flag on January 26. Official sources said that as far as the 300 km long Srinagar-Jammu highway is concerned the Government has decided to install police barriers and check posts at more than six places so that none from the saffron brigade was allowed to reach Lal Chowk. The sources said that in case the Government decided to facilitate a small group of BJYM activists in carrying out the flag hoisting exercise they would be taken to the state's summer capital under police escort. According to these sources both land and air routes to Srinagar were being plugged to prevent BJYM activists from reaching Lal Chowk. The sources said that the entire city of Srinagar was to be placed under strict curfew restrictions from the evening of January 25 to prevent the JKLF activists and supporters from staging Lal Chowk chalo on January 26. Sources said that adequate security measures were being taken to prevent forces from destabilizing the security scenario in the state. They said that additional companies of police and paramilitary forces were being deployed in and around Srinagar right from January 24 so that no political or separatist group was able to disrupt peace. Even in Jammu city the security grid has been strengthened. Official sources said that additional columns of police and paramilitary forces were to be deployed on the 110 km long Kathua-Jammu National Highway so that in case the BJYM activists were allowed to travel to Jammu no miscreants were able to commit some mischief by attacking the caravan of the youth wing of the BJP. Since several hundred BJYM activists from Punjab and Haryana were expected to join the marchers it would be very difficult for the police and the paramilitary forces to stop them either at Jammu or on their way to Udhampur.
