Poachers flee leaving behind dead civet cat,jungle cat, jackal | | | Jammu: Two youth today gave a slip to an anti-poaching team of wildlife protection department at Chhalla in Ramkote forest range of Billawar, Kathua, leaving behind a scooter which contained carsasses of a civet cat, a jungle cat and a jackal. While civet cat is killed for its musk glands, jungle cat and jackal are killed for their pelts. These animals are specified under different schedules and given protection under J&K wildlife protection Act, 1978, according to official sources. Sources said during anti-poaching patrolling, officials of wildlife protection department of wildlife division, Jammu, intercepted a scooter at Chhalla. Sighting them, the scooterist and his pillion rider fled the spot, leaving behind their two-wheeler (PB02N/8835) which contained a bag and two spears. The search of the bag led officials to the recovery of the carcasses of the three animals killed by them. The bag also contained five iron traps which were used by the poachers to trap the animals, the sources added.All the articles, including the scooter and the carcasses, were seized. The officials later got post-mortem of the killed animals conducted by veterinary doctors of animal husbandry department, Kathua. A complaint in this regard was also lodged by them with Billawar police station.Sources said the killing or hunting of wild animals, except under certain conditions, was banned under section 8 of the J&K wildlife protection Act, 1978 (amended up to 2002) and warranted legal action . Any person held guilty of committing this offence shall, on conviction, be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to six years and also with a fine up to Rs 25,000, depending on the schedule of the animal and location of the commitment of the crime. |
