BJP activists hoist saffron flags in ‘Chota Pakistan’
Scores arrested, security beefed up
1/22/2011 11:53:04 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 22: Amid shock and utter disbelief, the people in down town Srinagar also called ‘Chota Pakistan’ (Small Pakistan) saw hundreds of Bharataya Janata Party (BJP) posters and Saffron flags. The ‘daring’ act was undertaken during the preceding night, reports said.
This is for the first time that the BJP activists made their presence felt in the summer capital and that too in areas where ‘angels fear to tread.’ Most of the people came to know today that the BJP runs an office at Rajbagh amidst the offices of separatist organizations.
Before the people could react, the police swung into action and immediately removed the posters and the flags. Later a local news agency said that the police had launched a massive manhunt to arrest the BJP workers. Scores of activists have been taken into custody and lodged in police Station Kralkhud. A case has been registered and investigations are on. The police also seized thousands of posters urging the people to participate in the flag hoisting at Lal Chowk. Police sources said that the arrestees shall be released after January 26.
Some of the arrestees have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Dar of Soura, Hilal Ahmad Mir of Basant Bagh, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat of Lal Bazaar, Imtiaz Ahmad Sheikh of Qalamdanpora, Wasim Hasan Bhat of Qamarwari and Showkat Ahmad Mir of Nowgam. The identity of others could not be ascertained.
Nobody in the BJP headquarters at Rajbagh was available for comment. Reports said the office was sealed by the police. The police also foiled an attempt by the local BJP leaders to address a press conference. However, they succeeded in issuing a statement this evening. The party has strongly condemned the police action. The statement expressed determination to hoist the Tricolor at Lal Chowk on Republic Day.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the Valley especially in the summer capital. Barricades have been put in place on all important routes. Frisking of pedestrians and checking of vehicles has also been undertaken.
People living in rented accommodation in areas adjoining Lal Chowk to ensure their presence in the concerned police stations. They have also been directed to deposit three copies of their recent photographs in the police stations.
Similar instructions have been given to people living around the Bakshi stadium where the main function in connection with the Republic Day celebrations shall be held.
