Tourism Department ignores Jammu players
1/23/2011 9:21:31 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 23: In a bizarre incident, the state’s Department of Tourism `blatantly’ ignored outstanding players of Jammu while felicitating five sports persons in a function held here yesterday.
Undoubtedly, the cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh to each of the honoured players is something encouraging, but the `biased’ approach in short-listing the names has resulted into discouragement to those who have made state proud by excelling at the international level.
Honour of footballer, Mehraj-ud-Din Wadoo of Kashmir, who has represented Indian in Asia Cup, ignoring another, Arun Malhotra of Jammu, is quite unjustified.
While it was Mehraj’s first big event at the international level, Jammu’s Arun has already won gold medal in prestigious LG Cup in 2002 and a silver in Afro-Asian Games in 2003. Remained in Indian team for four long years as a defender, Arun has played for India’s top football clubs, including East Bengal.
Presently, this Jammu footballer is serving with ONGC holding same ranks of top cricketers, Varinder Sehwag, Gautam Gambir, Virat Kohli and shooter, Gagan Narang.
When contacted resident secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) Jammu wing, Surinder Singh Bunty said, “If Mehraj-u-Din is an inspiration for football in Kashmir, Arun Malhotra is a role model for us in Jammu. We welcome felicitation of Wadoo but at the same time expect a balanced approach on part of the departments doing such honours, Jammu’s talent too needs encouragement.”

Not only in football, Tourism Department also sidelined the big achiever in adventure sports. Jammu mountaineer, Ram Singh, elevated from the post of constable to Sub-Inspector by the J&K Police considering his achievement of climbing Mount Everest in 2008, has also been ignored.
“Government must shun its biased approach, especially in sports. Honour of a sportsperson definitely encourages others, but pick and choose policy certainly discourages and upset the achievers,” general secretary of J&K Mountaineer Association, Ram Khajuria.

It is pertinent to mention Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora felicitated five sportspersons, Shabir Ahmad, Gul Mustafa, Tashi Tandip, Namgyal and Mehraj-ud-Din Wadoo in a function organised by Department of Tourism at Jammu.
Each of the honoured players was presented a cash award of Rs 1.5 lakh, citation and memento.
