Chib, Sham launch Pulse Polio campaign | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 23: Thousands of children up to the age of five were given polio drops across Jammu region during the first phase of Pulse Polio campaign, which kicked off simultaneously from SMGS Hospital, Shalamar Road and Government Hospital Sarwal here today. Minister for Medical Education, R S Chib inaugurated Pulse Polio Campaign at Immunization Clinic at new children hospital building at SMGS Hospital by administering polio vaccine dose to a child. Chib, while speaking to the media persons said that the global initiative to eradicate poliomyelitis by the end of the year 2000 was the largest international disease control effort ever. Remarkable progress has been made since the initiative began in 1988, he said adding that the number of global polio cases declined from an estimated 350,000 cases to just over 7000 in 1999. Meanwhile, Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma inaugurated the campaign at Sarwal Hospital wherein he administered polio drops to few of the children including infants. On the occasion, the Minister also released gas balloons with next pulse polio campaign date imprinted on them. The minister also gave some gifts kept by the Hospital Administration to the children who were given polio drops. Sham Lal also inaugurated the “Centralized Registration Counter”, consisting of completely computerized registration, payments and enquiry counter besides inaugurating Nestle Café. The minor Operation Theater, which has been recently renovated and upgraded in the Hospital, was also thrown open for the public use by the Minister.
