SaMaPa Aalap: Captivating vocal recital at MAM College | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu , Jan 23: The 5th Annual SaMaPa Aalap Festival 2011, after two weeks of continuous programmes across numerous venues in the region and border areas, saw another captivating vocal recital at Govt. MAM College. The festival is being presented by ‘Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts’ (SaMaPa) in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism. Principal of the College Dr. Ajit Angral was the chief guest on the occasion. He congratulated SaMaPa and Abhay Sopori for their splendid work in the field of culture in J&K and extended his support in future also for all such activities by SaMaPa. Prof. Kailash Mehra, renowned singer and Head of the Deptt. (Music), MAM College, oordinated the function. She said that the Sopori family for generations has contributed at large in preserving, promoting and propagating the culture of J&K State and country at international level. She congratulated Abhay Sopori for further reviving the cultural scenario of the State and creating a new generation of music connoisseurs and musicians. Renowned Santoor maestro and music composer Abhay Rustum Sopori was the guest of honour. He urged the youth to come forward and be a part of the SaMaPa movement in preserving the identity of the State and country which is its culture. The concert was attended by large number of students and staff of the College. Charan Singh, well known Sitar player, Prof. Satish Sharma and Dr. Verma, Prof. Parveen Sabarwal and Jagdeep Kaur from SaMaPa, were also present on the occasion. The programme started with brief vocal recital by two students of the Music Deptt. of the College. Sanjeet Kumar of BA (Part III) and Shobhit of BA (Part I) presented the Bandish ‘Jare Jare Kagwa’ and Tarana ‘Dum Ta Na Na’ in Raga Malkaunce. Sanjeet also presented a Ghazal ‘Who To Ankh Chura Kar Nikal Gaya’. They were accompanied by Bua Ditta, a well known musician of the State, on Harmonium and Rampal on Tabla. This was followed by vocal recital by the guest artist Dr. Ojesh Pratap Singh who captivated the music students and music connoisseurs with his presentation. Bhawa and Tayyari demonstrated excellent sense of aesthetics, embellishment and improvisation while maintaining the purity of a raga. He concluded the recital with composition in Raga Bhairavi. He was accompanied by Shri Sarit Das on Tabla, a disciple of music legend Pt. Bhajan Sopori, and Ustad Sajjad Ahmad on Harmonium.
