| Victimised CRPF may refuse to assist civil administration in Kashmir | | | RUSTAM

Srinagar, Jan 23: India is perhaps the only country in the world where those responsible for the unity and integrity of the country are victimising and harassing their own security forces in order to appease and please the enemies of India. It is not an exaggeration. It is a statement of fact. Just visit Kashmir and interact with the CRPF personnel and you would take no time in determining the extent to which they have been demoralised by the political establishment, be it the state government or be it the central government.
The extent of their demoralisation, frustration and helplessness could be determined from the fact that some of the CRPF commandants have, according to very reliable sources, started "cursing themselves for choosing a career that has brought them nothing but worries and only worries, including the apprehension that they may be implicated in false and fabricated cases and put behind the bars for an indefinite period." Some of them have started thinking in terms of "giving up their jobs so that they could live with and look after their families in Orissa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh" and so on. "Almost all of them are", according to these sources, "moving from pillar to post seeking help and support so that they are not implicated in false cases and booked for crimes they have not committed." "They are also meeting senior advocates, narrating their woeful tales and requesting them to suggest them the way out," the sources also reveal, and further add that "they are so upset, so unnerved and so uncertain despite the fact that they are so innocent, so committed to the cause, so disciplined and so helpful."
At the same time, however, these sources reveal that the CRPF commandants and their men do not say that they would revolt against the authorities, but the "general feeling is that most of the CRPF commandants and their men are extremely angry with the political establishment." Hence, it would be no exaggeration to say that they may lay down arms and refuse to assist the civil administration. Why because the civil administration wants them to "assist it on the condition that they would keep their hands, legs and brain cuffed"; that "they would not take action even if the armed militants attack them and their camps and bunkers and stone pelters throw deadly and sharp edged boulders on them with an intent to kill them." Why because the "civil administration, which is spineless and which doesn't have the required will and the capacity to take on the terrorists and stone pelters and which has elements who are part of the movement, wants to use the security forces as scapegoats in order to divert the attention of New Delhi away from the ground situation as it exists in Kashmir and help directly and indirectly the unruly elements in Kashmir."
This precisely is the situation under which the CRPF personnel are operating and discharging their duties. In other words, they are discharging their duties in a highly hostile environment, with the ruling elites in the state and at the center, instead of siding with them, defending them and not doing anything whatever to keep their morale high, only condemning them and blaming them for that is happening in across the Kashmir Valley.
