Two dozen aspirants for Poonch MLC seat | | | SHAFIQ MIR EARLY TIMES REPORT Rajouri, Jan 23: The border district Poonch based politicians belonging to both coalition partners National Conference and Congress have geared up their campaign for a single reserved seat in upper house of state assembly for district Poonch .The politicians belonging to both Congress and National conference have started lobbying in this regard. The seat in discussion , presently represented by Mohammad Rashid Qureshi of National Conference is about to go vacant in March 2011 for which the politicians of the district have geared up their campaign. Qureshi was nominated by government on this seat five years ago after J and K high court had given a decision in his favor following his writ petition against then PDP nominee Master Tassaduq Hussain of Rajouri district. Qureshi had challenged the nomination of Tassaduq on the grounds that later belonged to district Rajouri while the said seat was reserved for Poonch district only. There are about two dozen aspirants for the said seat including two sitting MLCs like Rashid Qureshi of NC and Mir Jhangir of Congress because both of the sitting members are about to complete their earlier term and both of them belong to district Poonch for which the seat is reserved. Though , it is yet to be decided by the coalition partners that which one party will field its candidate on this seat as per their power sharing agreement , how ever, the politicians belonging to both the parties are lobbying in their favor . In National Conference, beside present MLC Rashid Qureshi, there are at least 17 aspirants in the district like Moulana Sayed of Poonch, Shah Mohammad Tantray of Poonch and Dr Shehnaz Ganai of Haveli tehsil . While Chowdhary Rahim Dad of Mendhar tehsil and Mohammad Ayoub Shabnum of Surankote are also in fray beside others. The congress party has also two front runner aspirants for this seat like Mir Jhangir and former MLC Ch Lal Mohammad Sabir. In National Conference , sources said, the party leader ship has promised this seat to at least one dozen candidates at the time of assembly elections and now it is in fix how to choose any one from them . At least three candidates from Haveli tehsil of Poonch district like Shah Mohammad Tantray, Moulana Sayeed Ahmed and Dr. Shehnaz Ganai claim that they had been promised this seat by party top leadership during 2008 assembly elections. As per an other party worker of Mendhar tehsil and former MLC Chowdhary Rahim Dad also claims that he was promised the seat in legislative council in 2008 assembly election during a public meeting at Mendhar addressed by party patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah ." I hope party will consider me this time because it has been promised to me at that time Farooq Sahib himself in a public meeting and he can not deviate from his word" he told this correspondent . Similarly, Shah Mohammad Tantray was also promised same by the party and he was asked to make the success of the party candidate . In such circumstances , it will be very difficult for the party to decide the candidature on this seat and this can lead to the split in the local unit of the party in the district . Keeping in view the infighting among the party cadres for this seat, sources close to National Conference told this correspondent that the party leadership was thinking on the lines that how to manage the issue so that none of them is displeased . Sources said, the party high command has decided to give the Poonch seat to Congress and get one from them in Jammu or any where else in exchange . With this technique , the party leadership wants to keep the cadres united . However, Congress party has less problem as it has only few candidates in the queue of aspirants . Though the coalition partners have not taken any decision on this matter so far, however, observers is of the opinion that National Conference leadership will itself offer this seat to congress and some where else in exchange . |
