Advocate among 3 held in Hawala racket; Rs 20 Lakh seized | Poor prosecution an advantage to Hawala dealers in J&K | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 23: Resident of Hyderpora locality in Srinagar, one Ghulam Mohammad Bhat was arrested near Nagrota in Srinagar-Jammu national highway three years back. Police claimed to have seized a huge cash consignment of Rs 55 Lakh from Bhat which was allegedly flowing in to Srinagar from a New Delhi-based Hawala racket. As Police failed to produce any evidence against Bhat, he was released by court. Even the call detail record failed to help Police as the Hawala agents in Delhi had made and received all of their telephone calls between Delhi and Srinagar through landlines phones of Public Call Offices (PCOs). Within three years, Bhat's name is among three residents of Srinagar who have been arrested by a joint team of Kashmir Police and Special Cell of Delhi Police here allegedly carrying another cash consignment. SSP Srinagar, Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, said that Bhat, who is himself working as an advocate, was taken into custody alongwith his accomplices, namely Farooq Ahmad Dagga and Ghulam Jeelani Leelu. "One Maruti car and Hawala money to the tune of Rs 20.20 Lakh has been recovered from their possession," he said. Earlier, Delhi Police sleuths had sought the help of Srinagar Police in this connection. The trio had been booked in a case FIR No.4 of 2011 under section 120-B, of India Penal Code and section 17 of Unlawful activities Prevention act, of Police station Special Cell-New Delhi. Official sources said a team from Delhi police has arrived in Srinagar to take custody of Bhat was arrested in a similar case three years ago. Bhat was arrested in 2008 in Udhampur district while returning to the valley with a Hawala money consignment of Rs Rs 55 Lakh that had been concealed in a gas cylinder. Bhat's car had met with an accident. Police got suspicious about his conduct when he abandoned the car and other belongings on the spot but began shifting an LPG cylinder very carefully to another vehicle. When it was opened, it was found filled with cash worth Rs 55 Lakh. As Police failed to prove allegations, Bhat and others in the net were all released by court. Most of such cases have failed in different courts or even during the process of investigation itself as Police officials retain a portion of the money seized or found to be in circulation for themselves. They in turn challan such cases which could not be proved during prosecution or even close the investigation as "not admitted". |
