BJP leaders slam PM statement, say it is surrender to separatists | Crackdown on activists repressive, undemocratic: Jaitely | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Jan 23: A day after Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh accused BJP of scoring political points on flag hoisting issue, the BJP stalwarts made a scathing attack against him for and accused both Centre and the J&K Government of "surrendering" to separatists who have declared that they will not let the tricolour be unfurled. "The Government has arrested the members of Bharatiya Yuva Morcha. They have sealed all border points in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent their entry... large scale of arrests of BJP workers are being made. Even within the State, movements have been stopped. Trains carrying the BJP Youth workers from all over the country are being cancelled and diverted forcibly and BJP youth reaching Jammu & Kashmir are being diverted forcibly to other parts of the States", the BJP leader lamented. "This is unacceptable, repressive and undemocratic," senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said while addressing a press conference here today. Jaitley slammed the Union government led by Congress and said the attempts to stop the youth workers of BJP from reaching Srinagar is "a disproportionate panic reaction." "Assertion of Indian sovereignty on Indian soil is considered unacceptable. It is a regrettable," said Jaitley. He slammed the Prime Minister for calling the hoisting of the flag a divisive issue. He said the Prime Minister is quiet on the issue of those who are espousing the cause of dividing India and singing to the tune of separatists. By doing so "they have surrendered to the separatists," he said and asserted that party activists have already travelled through 11 states and will hoist the Indian flag in Jammu and Kashmir "We completely reject what Prime Minister has said. It is a psychological surrender to separatism," Jaitley said. "The BJP is determined. It is a peaceful assertion of nationalist sentiments," he said. "How can the Prime Minister think that hoisting a flag will divide the nation," the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha asked. Describing the "crackdown" by the State Government as a "panic reaction", he said the actions were "even more shameful as the UPA Government took no action against various groups of separatists who had gone to New Delhi a few months back and openly spoke of dividing a particular state and about sedition. "Is hoisting the national flag a provocative issue? By preventing the BJYM workers they have surrendered to the separatists. "The prime minister and the Congress party have to give some clear answers on why they are taking action against patriots and no action against separatists," Jaitley said, adding hoisting the Indian flag is a peaceful assertion of nationalistic sentiment in a sovereign land. Jaitley compared the incident to what happened in 1953 when late socialist leader Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was prevented from entering Jammu and Kashmir. "57 or 58 years later, this Government repeats the same". He asserted that it was clear that the Government was "psychologically surrendering" to separatists Meanwhile, questioning the Prime Minister's reservations on BJP's plan to unfurl the national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, party veteran LK Advani today said the "State is surrendering" to the separatists who have declared that they will not let the tricolour be hoisted. "If the rationale for the prohibitory orders is apprehension of breach of peace, curbs should be targeted towards those who have declared that they will not let the tricolour be put up at the Lal Chowk.... "And certainly not against those who have been repeatedly asserting that they will peacefully, and respectfully, unfurl the tricolour at Lal Chowk," Advani wrote in his latest blog posting titled 'Let not the State surrender to separatists'. Referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement on the issue yesterday, Advani voiced hope that he would realise that BJP Yuva Morcha activists were "not trying to score a political point" but were instead challenging the separatists. "And the State is surrendering to them," he said. Dubbing the decision of the Jammu and Kashmir Government not to allow BJP hoist flag at Lal Chowk as "perverse", he said the Government should realise the "enormity of the shame our authorities are inviting for themselves" by their move. Advani voiced hope that he would realise that BJP Yuva Morcha activists were "not trying to score a political point" but were instead challenging the separatists. |
