EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 24: The NC-Congress coalition government has declared that it would not allow the BJP to hoist the national Flag at the Srinagar's Lal Chowk on the Republic Day. It has said that the BJP's whole programme is politically motivated and ill-designed and it has the potential of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in Kashmir. It has started arresting the BJP leaders and workers and sealed all the roads leading to Srinagar. It has converted the summer capital into a fortress. It has also sealed the borders and deployed security forces and the State Police at Lakhanpur, the gateway of Jammu and Kashmir, on an unprecedented scale to thwart the possibility of the BJP workers entering the state. In other words, the NC-led government has viewed the decision of the BJP to hoist national flag at Lal Chowk as an onslaught on the unity and integrity of the state and taken steps which are taken in a war-like situation in order to defeat the enemies of the nation. This is the state of nation. What an irony!
The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, who is also constitutional head of the State and whose duty it is to defend the Indian Constitution, has also made an appeal that "no political or other issue must be allowed to mar Republic Day celebrations." To be more precise, he has indirectly cautioned the BJP and asked it not to vitiate the political atmosphere in the Kashmir Valley by sticking to its stand on flag hoisting at Srinagar. And, remember, he would address the people of the State on the Republic Day. It is obvious that his address would be couched in a language that doesn't hurt the sentiments of those condemning and opposing the BJP's rational and national decision to hoist the national flag in Srinagar. It is also obvious that his address would reflect on the steps New Delhi has been taking to "assuage the hurt feelings" of those who have been demanding separation from India or a separate dispensation and taking recourse to violent methods in order to force down the nation's throat their pernicious and regressive ideology. In other words, he might refer to the appointment of interlocutors, who have been asking the Kashmiri separatists to prepare a roadmap so that New Delhi could conclude a treaty with them and resolve the so-called Kashmir problem politically. This is the state of the nation. What an irony!
The Congress-led UPA Government has also taken the plunge and asked the BJP to desist from doing anything that could hurt the sensitivities of the separatists and communalists in Kashmir. So much so that the Union Government has made up its mind not to allow any train to reach Jammu carrying the BJP leaders and workers as if they are the enemies of the country. The case in point is the train carrying the BJP workers from Karnataka. This means the State Government and the Union Government are working in unison to defeat the BJP's resolve. This is the state of nation. In other words, the custodians of the Indian State are at war with those who wish to exercise their sovereign and constitutional right to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk and those who want to show the separatists like Geelani, Malik and Mirwaiz their rightful place. What an irony!
This is the way the world ends, not with bang but with a whimper. Gone are those days when the Congress leaders and workers had at midnight on New Year's (1930) eve had adopted at Lahore the creed of Puran Swaraj and the national tri-colour was unfurled amidst cries, no longer just of "Bande Mataram," but "Inquilab Zindabad." Isn't it not an irony that the Congress, which today rules the country and shares power with the pro-autonomy NC in Jammu and Kashmir, has described the BJP's decision to hoist the national flag in Srinagar as a political gimmick and as an attempt aimed at disturbing peace in Kashmir? Of course, it's an irony. No, it is something more than that: it has made common cause with the secessionists and annoyed the whole of the nationalist constituency across the country. There is no doubt whatever that the Congress will have to pay a very heavy price in the days to come.
